Arkos Island: An Unknown Sporades Gem

If you’re searching for an unspoiled paradise away from the tourist hustle, this spot deserves your full attention.

Tucked away in the Northern Sporades, this enchanting islet offers a refreshing escape with its breathtaking landscapes and pristine turquoise waters. While it may not boast the same level of fame as its neighboring islands, Arkos has quietly won over the hearts of those seeking a more authentic and tranquil experience.

Covering a modest area of 0.414 square kilometers, Arkos is an uninhabited haven nestled in the embrace of nature. Situated across from Skiathos, to which it administratively belongs, the island is located east of the main port’s exit in Skiathos town, just beyond the charming islet of Maragos. While ships do not approach its shores, boats offer the only means of reaching this pristine destination.

Arkos may not boast the same dazzling beaches as its more renowned counterparts like Lalaria or Koukounaries in Skiathos. However, it captivates visitors with a unique blend of fragrant pines, crystalline waters and the opportunity to escape the crowds of its cosmopolitan neighbour. As you approach the central beach, known simply as “Arkos,” the sight of lush vegetation and towering trees engulfs you in a dazzling natural embrace.

Arkos, although just one of the island’s beaches, stands out as the most accessible and remarkable. This small sandy enclave invites travelers to unwind amidst the island’s scenic beauty. As you lay your towel on the sand, the pine trees reach almost to the water’s edge, providing a fresh and serene backdrop. For the adventurous, Arkos beach also serves as a gateway to the island’s interior, beckoning you to explore its rich landscape on foot.

Upon arrival at Arkos beach, you’ll notice its well-organized setup. Umbrellas and sunbeds dot the coastline, courtesy of the family-owned business Arkos Beach. While you’re welcome to bring your own equipment and relax on the sandy shore, the establishment offers a convenient option for replenishing your supplies. Quench your thirst with cold water, iced coffee, or soft drinks, or indulge in a satisfying meal featuring fresh fish and seafood—a true tribute to the island’s seaside.

Operating annually from May to the end of September, the taverna at Arkos Beach has played a significant role in attracting visitors in recent years. As a result, the beach has gained popularity among boaters seeking an idyllic retreat. During the peak summer season, you may find a considerable number of people enjoying this slice of paradise. However, outside these bustling periods, Arkos retains its tranquility and relative seclusion, preserving its inherent charm.

For those fortunate enough to arrive on their own boat, Arkos offers more secluded and unspoiled beaches to discover. Many consider the southwestern beach, situated south of the main sandy enclave, to be the most beautiful. Alternatively, venture to the northwestern part of the island, where a protected rocky coastline adorned with pebbles awaits, shielded from the southern winds.

In the southeastern corner, a hidden sandy beach provides a scenic vista of the neighboring islet of Repi, distinguished by its iconic lighthouse constructed in 1914. If weather conditions permit, the eastern side of Arkos attracts diving enthusiasts and snorkelers eager to explore its underwater wonders.

To reach Arkos, your only option is by boat, as there are no docking facilities for larger vessels. If you don’t own a boat, you can rent a small vessel, not exceeding 30 horsepower unless you have the appropriate license. Another possibility is to arrange transportation with the sea taxis operating in Skiathos or Skopelos. Departing from the central port of SkiathosKoukounaries beach, or Loutraki of Skopelos, these sea taxis can transport you to Arkos, provided you make the necessary arrangements for your return trip to the organized sandy beach.

Additionally, you have the option of joining a scheduled excursion to Skiathos, often including Arkos in their itineraries. Many tour operators offer sea tours and diving experiences, especially during the summer season when the beach is in full swing.
