Athena Spakouri: Greece consistently tops the list of choices for Cypriot travelers

Greece remains consistently top of the list of preferences for Cypriot travelers, as the diversity of the Greek tourism product fully meets their needs for leisure travel, cultural experiences, city breaks, or alternative forms of tourism.

As mentioned in an interview given by the Head of the GNTO Cyprus Service, Athena Spakouri, to the Cypriot financial site InBusinessNews, popular destinations (Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Kos) continue to account for a high percentage of the preferences of Cypriots visiting Greece, but at the same time, increasing demand is also observed for less prominent destinations in the Cypriot market, such as Naxos and Skiathos.

According to recent data from the Statistical Service of Cyprus, total travel movements of Cypriots in April 2025 recorded an increase of 24.1% compared to the corresponding month of 2024, with Greece absorbing 33.3% of the total travel volume, the United Kingdom 8.6% and Italy 6.5%.

This upward trend is reinforced by the strategy of improving air connectivity. Aegean has increased seat availability by 22% for 2025, offering up to seven daily flights to/from Athens and 11 weekly flights to/from Thessaloniki.

Sustainability and digital transformation

During the interview, particular emphasis was also placed on the strategy of the Ministry of Tourism and the Greek National Tourism Organization for sustainable tourism development, the further extension of the tourist season, the promotion of alternative forms of tourism, as well as the geographical dispersion of visits to areas that offer unique travel experiences beyond the summer season (Epirus, Western Macedonia, Arcadia, Crete, Lesvos, etc.).

Finally, the importance of targeted digital promotion, a dynamic presence on social media, and the development of digital experience platforms was highlighted, in order to strengthen the interactive relationship with the Cypriot public.
