Sifnos named the most appealing destination for Australians in 2026

Far from the fast pace of other islands, Sifnos stands out as a destination that has preserved its authentic character.

Greece once again confirms its strong appeal, ranking among the top global destinations for 2026. According to a recent feature by the international travel outlet Broadsheet, Greek destinations stand out not only for their timeless beauty and cultural heritage, but above all for their ability to offer authentic, human-centered experiences deeply connected to place. The Australian publication’s list also includes destinations such as the Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Mexico, and Albania.

In the same feature, Sifnos is highlighted as the top and most meaningful choice for modern travelers seeking something beyond the typical Greek experience. Away from the intense pace of other islands, Sifnos is presented as a destination that has retained its identity—an island where daily life flows naturally, villages remain vibrant, and hospitality is not a product, but a way of life.

Broadsheet goes on to describe Sifnos as a place where the experience is built through small, authentic moments: enjoying fresh seafood by the sea, hiking along trails that connect monasteries, nature, and villages, and watching the sunset in narrow alleys where the whitewashed houses meet the light of the Aegean. Special mention is made of the island’s long-standing ceramic tradition, deeply rooted in its local identity, as well as its rich culinary heritage, which has made Sifnos a reference point for Greek cuisine.

Sifnos’s recognition as a top destination is part of a broader strategy to boost its international profile, focusing on experiential travel, the connection between locals and the land, and the promotion of culture and gastronomy through initiatives by the Municipality of Sifnos, supported by local stakeholders and professionals.

“Our goal is to showcase something deeper—that Sifnos is not just a holiday destination, but a place to truly experience and draw lasting emotions, images, and memories from,” said Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Giannis Rafeletos. “In this direction, the narrative of experiential travel outside the high season is resonating with visitors not only from Greece and Europe, but also from further afield, such as Australia. It’s worth noting that the destination recorded a 9% increase in ferry arrivals in 2025 compared to 2024, as well as ‘historic highs’ in monthly arrivals from April through August.”
